Content of mud (%, dry weight) in surface sediments. Fine-grained sediment particles are important carriers of contaminants. High content of mud in sediments is typical for accumulation reservoirs, where the content of heavy metals and other pollutants can be considerable.

Can be used to estimate whether there is a deposition pool in which the sample is taken, and if high content of heavy metals can be linked to the grain size composition.
